Is there any good fly fishing shows on TV(I don't have Outdoor Channel) or any good website that teach the basic of fly fishing.

- The best way to learn the basics of flyfishing is find an oldtimer and learn what he has to teach. I learned from my granpa while sitting in his livingroom listening to what he had to say. also go to Wal Mart's sporting goods section and check out the fishing videos they have there. They have two realy good flyfish videos. One is for Trout Fishing and the other is general fly fishing. Both Vids are 199.99 each. and both go into excelante detail on the basics of setting up your rod and real, tying your leader and flies onto your line, and the basics of casting techniques. Also included in the videos is a list of other videos you can order off of the internet that get more advanced as you progree into your fly fishing.
- I odn't remember what it's called (ask in your local tackle shop) but one of Lefty Kreahs video's will get your technique sorted. I went from waving the bloody thing around all over the place to being able to shoot a whole line almost instantly.
- check out these two sites. the first on will cover everything from how to chose rods, reels, and lines to fly-tying techniques. it also has a lot of good links for information on the basics of fly selection and hatches. http://sfotf.com/main/index.php http://www.virtualflybox.com/ they are both really good sites that i use on a regular basis. my father taught me to fly-fish when i was 6 then tie flies when i was 10.
- I am not aware of any websites that go to the length needed to teach someone how to actually fly fish. There used to be a fantastic show on TV called Fly Fish TV. They were shown on PBS stations and I loved the show. It was very down to earth, no hopping into your private jet to hit a river for a few hours. Just good fly fishing. A couple of years ago, PBS stations had to start charging huge prices for airing shows and FlyFishTV had to stop. Last year they sold the programs they had already produced in monthly DVD's. That was really nice because then you got a full hour of the show instead of a cut down 1/2 hour. I really looked forward to getting those every month. I called them this morning and they still are selling DVD's. They are called Cascade Mediaworks in Portland, Oregon. Give them a call at 1-800-FLYFISH (3593474) or check them out at www.flyfishtv.com Go down to the bottom of the page and click on "how to". That takes you to a page of instructional DVD's. I suggest you buy two DVD's. 1. Fly Fishing Trout Streams by Maggie Merriman. This covers the fundamentals of dry fly fishing and nymph fishing techniques. Length is 1 hour. Cost is $24.95 2. Nymphing By The Numbers by Kelly Galloup. This is "A complete and systematic approach to nymphing with lessons on presentation". Length 2 hours. Cost is $34.95 They ship any two DVD's for $5, so the total cost of both of these DVD's should be $64.90. Considering the amount of money you are going to be spending on your fishing trips, this is a worthwhile investment. Previously I have suggested fly casting DVD's, Joan Wulff's to be precise. Without a local fly shop or club to go to, that would be the best bet for learning how to cast a fly line. Larry
