- Well you need to match the weight of your fly line with the weight of your rod your using for best castability (that should be on your rod <Recomended Weight Line>). I recommend a floating line for dry fly fishing. As far as leaders go I like a tapered leader/tippet it helps with the way a fly lands on the water . Also use as small of a diameter tippet as possible ,especially in lakes and ponds.
- You need to match the weight of the line with the rod, i should tell you what weight to use. I would also stick with a floating line, they are a bit easier to control and easier to detect strikes on. As for a leader, I would look at a tapered leader in a size 4x, 5x, or 6x......the higher the number the lighter the strength
- floating line if u will mainly use surface flies. and go with a short leader 4 to 6 foot to start with until u can cast good long leaders are a little harder to learn with. if u are catching small trout use the 3x or 4x tippet. also make sure your line weight matches your rod!
- If you have a top water fly you want a floating line with a thin leader to keep the fly on top. A sinking line should be used with larger flys and heavier baits such as spinners and artificial bugs or salmon eggs, or some cheese baits. Good Luck....
