In the movie The Perfect Storm. They say toss the birds in the water. What is their purpose?

- I'm not familiar with the movie. In some countries, they use cormorants (sea birds) to catch fish. The birds have collars on their necks which prevent them from swallowing the fish and a rope tied to a leg. When the bird catches a fish, it is retrieved, the fish removed from its mouth and the cormorant is sent out for another fish.
