Fishing Q&A

rod and reel for general medium heavy fishing?

I already have some medium light rod/reels for general fishing in the area but wanted on heavy, stronger just so we can try for some larger heavy bass, pike, cats, etc. I was looking and found Shakespeare® Ugly Stik® Spinning Rods, 9' medium action 2 piece $39.95, or 7' medium action 2 piece for $29.95. And the Bass Pro Shops® Extreme® XPS® Travel Spinning Rods, 6' 6'' medium heavy 3 piece $59.88, Both at Bass pro for the reel I have two ideas, the Bass Pro Shops® MegaCast® Spinning Reels model MCX40FD for $19.99 and the Daiwa® Regal®-XiA Spinning Reels model RG4000-XIA for $49.95 I know most of you will suggest Shimano Bait-runner 3500 but PLEASE DON'T I have a budget, which isn't very high I would like you ideas, also, if you know of a secure place to buy that is cheaper, I would like it very much Thanks in advance it would be freshwater only for those who tell me that there is a rod for $??.?? at bass pro or wherever, please tell model, link, or some how tell me how to find the one you are talking about

  1. go with whaty you can afford, look in mags they have offers on combo deals, that may suit your budget better
  2. what ever works best for you is what you should use
  3. 9' medium action 2 piece $39.95 i would try to get an 8' to 7' 8'' rod though
  4. bass pro shops have a med heavy combo in either a spinning or spin-cast (thumb release) in med/heavy action for $39,99 for your choice. page 116 2008 master fishing catalog...items I and J on the page
  5. i have the 9' ugly stik works great especially for the price it my favorite rod to fish with and haven't broken it yet caught some big pike on it but i don't no about the reels never used them but i would go with the best you can afford
  6. I would prefer to use a 1 piece rod as well. PS...Ugly Sticks is the bottom of the barrell. For $10-$20 more, you can buy a better grade rod. You already mentioned Bass Pro. They have many rods in the $50-$60 price range. Also, for you, the 7' rod may be the longest you'll need. My longest rod is 6' 10" and I fish tournaments. Don't get too long, it'll get in the way!! As far a the reel...I see you are looking for a spinning reel. For a budget shopper, go with the Okuma Alumina AL-20 for $70; Quantim Array for $40; Daiwa Regal XIA for $50. These are some examples of decent reels for fairly cheap.
  7. well if you are gonna be using lures you need to buy a abu garcia revo s $110 and any 6'6" graphite pole thats about $40 or more and if your fishing on the bottom use a abu garcia 6500 C3 reel and a 7' berkley glowstick
