Deep Sea Fishing? motion sickness?

When is the best time to avoid big waves, as in when to go and how to avoid sea sickness and what to do ? please help

  1. I don't know the best time to avoid big waves, but I have motion sickness and my doctor prescribed Antivert for dizziness and nausea. They really worked. You can also buy Dramamine over the counter, but I don't know how well it works. Hope your next deep sea fishing trip is better!
  2. UNfortunately, sea sickness is not all about the waves. It's more like a confusion. Your inner ear is the main culprit but your eyes and brain play a part as well. None are immune and all have suffered at one point, even the saltiest dog out there. You can buy sea sicknes/ motion sickness pills, patches and pressure point "cures" at any drug store. You can take natural things like Ginseng before a trip to help you out. Stick with the patches and pills, it's a sure fire way to avoid a terrible trip.

  4. There are a few things you can do which will help, but if you're going to be sea sick well there's not much that stops you from feeling ill. Firstly if you begin to feel seasick stay above deck in the fresh air, by concentrating on one point on the horizon also helps. There are many tablets you can take to help prevent it, and bands that are said to help but they can be expensive and some are one use only, also ive heard that crystallized ginger helps. http://www.fishingmag.co.nz/biggame-sea-sickness.htm
  5. Take Dramamine or Bonine the day before your trip, then again every 4-6hours until your trip is over. I know the box says 30min prior to your trip, but it takes longer for it to kick in, and keep it going. Bonine is a newer and lesser known seasickness pill, but in my opinion it is better than dramamine since Bonine doesn't make you drowsy. Another trick is to take Dill pickles with you. When ever you start to feel seasick, eat a pickle. Something about the vinegar or makes you feel better fast. Ive seen it work hundreds of times. Another thing that helps as a quick cure is Ginger. Some places sell ginger tablets for quick cures. On the boats I work on, we usually bring along some cheap ginger snap cookies from the grocery store for when we are working and feel a little sick on a rough day. There is also patches to put behind your ear but I think thats a prescription only deal, You can talk to your doctor about that. Hope this helps.
  6. The over the counter remedies work pretty well if you follow the instructions and take the medication BEFORE you leave the dock. Preferrably an hour before then keep taking them evry few hours. Other than that, eat peanut butter before you go out if your hungry. It's one of the few things that tastes the same coming up as it did going down. I've heard that the wrist bands work too.
  7. Have some good responses from others but, might stipulate layin' off the ingestion of a lot of foods before the trip, also STAY AWAY from the greasy stuff :(... Site below has a lengthy Do's and Don'ts when it comes to the sea sickness syndrome (from me readin' through it, it's looks purrrty informative). Fortunately haven't experiened it (not yet at least) but, just my witnessin' others goin' through that ~ it looks pretty D _ _ n excruciating!
