Fishing Q&A

Trout fishing the Big Thomson River in Estes Park, CO?

anyone ever been fly fishing in estes park colorado? Where do I go (what two points on the river do I need to fish between?) I'm going to be near the Big Thompson River, west of Lake Estes. I hear that the fishing is done east of Lake Estes on the Big Thompson and West of Lake Estes somewhere in or around Rockey Mountain National Park. I also hear that there is a part of the river west of Lake Estes that isnt so good for fishing and I want to make sure that I don't end up on that stretch of the river....does anyone know what Im talking about???? Any advice would help.

  1. Try these links, and call the fly shop- Rocky Mt Anglers. Where you go and what you use will depend on WHEN- the stream flows and water temps will determine the best place and what to use. Good luck. http://www.flyfishingconnection.com/cobigthompson.html http://www.rockymtanglers.com/reports/report.cfm?id=9
  2. There are some great spots between Loveland and Estes on Hwy 34. West of Estes, the Big Thompson runs right through town, then goes into Rocky Mountain National Park. I haven't seen anyone doing any serious fishing on the west side, though there are fish. If you're going to be on the west side of Estes, all you have to do is take about a fifteen minute car ride to get to the east side fishing spots. If you want to take a drive with some amazing scenery, and do some, as it was explained to me, "Gold Medal Fly Fishing Areas", go over the park, and fish the river between Grand lake and Granby. The YMCAs in both Estes, and on the other side of the park, Snow Mountian Ranch, used to have fishing guides for either serious fly fishing, or family outings to some of the lakes for a great price.
  3. I don't know much about the Big Thompson but I would suggest you spend some time on the Poudre River which is north of Rockey Mtn Nat Park. I've spent many weeks on the upper reaches of the stream. It's usually high and fast until after the 4th of July. There's some good camping there as well if you're the camping type.
