Why the assumption that liberals are less "liberal" about gun laws?
Personally I’m a socialist and hate both liberal & conservative politicians. But even I can see that they’re a mixed bag on this issue. When he was governor of California, conservative icon Ronald Reagan signed the law forbidding open carry of firearms by civilians in urban areas. However, even under today’s Democratic-majority legislature & centrist Republican governor, it is legal for civilians to open carry in California unincorporated areas where the local county has no laws forbidding it, including to and from your campsite when wilderness camping. In Florida, which unlike California has an okay arrangement to license CONCEALED carry, ALL open carry is forbidden unless you are on private property, actually in the process of practicing on a legal range, or in the process of hunting, fishing or camping. Vermont, with former governors like Howard Dean, full health insurance and a liberal reputation, requires no license whatsoever for concealed carry -If you can own it legally, you can carry it concealed, whether you are a resident or not. Few restrictions on open carry exist, and the right to BEAR arms is specified in both the state constitution and in statute in no uncertain terms. The best concealed carry law in the U.S., Alaska’s, was written by a liberal state legislator. While, like in Vermont, a license is not required, Alaska WILL issue you one in case you travel, so that you can exercise the right in states that have reciprocal arrangements with Alaska. So with all of these MIXED aspects of liberals vs. conservatives on gun laws, why is there an automatic assumption in the firearms community that liberals and Democrats are worse on our firearms rights than conservatives and Republicans? You're wrong Giant. I LIVE in Florida, HAVE a concealed carry permit, but if you check this website -- http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/news/concealed_carry.html it is illegal to carry a gun in your car without a concealed carry permit UNLESS it is snapped into a holster, or is in a bag or something, or in the glove compartment. And this website - http://opencarry.org/fl.html tells you about the extensive restrictions on Florida open carry. Check your facts! Seriously, dude, if you're driving around in Florida with a gun out on the seat in plain sight, you can be arrested. Check the frequently-asked questions under the list of states in the first link I just posted. That's a state government website - I didn't make it up. And Nonya, I've bought stuff from AIM. They're not bad, although a little higher priced than many other dealers. FilmRedneck, so far, is the only one to give a thoughtful answer. OOOPS I'm wrong, Whip too

- because the majority of the liberal base is anti gun.especially in congress.
- Clueless people come in all forms, shapes, sizes and voter registration declarations. I know plenty of gun owners who are Democrats. I know plenty of gun haters who are conservatives. People who hate guns are clueless about them. They're uneducated about them. They are IGNORANT about firearms. That's what I find when I get into the subject. Political affiliations sometimes don't help with that.
- Because the Democrats, most of whom are raging liberals, are the ones trying to promote gun control and void the 2nd amendment. By the way, your facts are not facts at all. In Florida I can have a handgun on the seat of my car as long as it is in plane sight. I can wear a handgun, in a holster, as long as it is in plane sight.
- Why would a socialist need a gun? just call the cops. www.aimsurplus.com great deal on Sig P6's
- democrats r usually extremely leftist hippies who hate the 2nd amendment along with a lot of other rights. people who think guns are bad are ignorant and never even used one. all it takes is common sense to know theres nothing wrong with ppl owning guns who dont have a criminal record
- Most liberals I know are in favor of BANNING handguns.......I can carry ANYWHERE in the US except airports....Under title 18 Homeland Security...but FACTS show that in States with carrying rights..CRIME GOES DOWN
- As a Marxist, I am in favor of arming the proletariat for that day when the working class can take power from the bourgeoisie. However, that day, at least in the United States, is very far away. The proletariat will use legal and non-violent illegal (as far as open warfare is concerned) means to seize power (as in the past). The need for anyone to own firearms is often over-stated by conservatives. So where does this "no gun" mentality come from? It comes from bourgeois thought, which liberals buy into whole heartedly. Democrats, liberals, and the like, all attack working class policies, such as arming the proletariat, as well as all working class policies that can prepare the working class to take power. The idea is based upon absolutisms, and which therefore attempt to force the proletariat from adopting the means to come to come to power and liberate humanity. All killing is wrong. Never lie. These absolutisms are created by the ruling class in order to force the proletariat to conform to bourgeois morality. Sometimes it is moral to shoot a person to liberate families or to lie to a boss in order to form a union. If all the "progressive" people are against the means to take power for the working class, than the ruling bourgeoisie will remain in control of all power. Liberals are bourgeois and therefore capitalists. They will do anything that will allow the capitalists to remain in power, which usually includes attacking the working class. Liberal capitalist do not want to run the risk of the working class coming to power, so they will attack, without offering real solutions, proletariat answers. It is important to point out, that throughout history, the liberals have always condoned a policy of non-violence, while voting and approving of huge amounts of money for war.
- The Constitution clearly recognizes a God-given right to keep and bear arms. However the debate has gotten convoluted, certain laws simply do not apply in today's society. Basically people are nuts today, and if everyone was walking around with a gun it would be scary. What I don't understand is why in some area's all you have to do is walk into wall-mart and you can buy a firearm. In N.Y it is near impossible to even get a carry permit and they do not honor carry permits from anywhere outside of N.Y
