  1. Go to a local fishing store
  2. The fly is the bait and using weights is almost, but not quite, unheard of. If you need to get a type of fly deeper, there are fast-sinking lines available as well as weighted flys made with wire or lead foil wraps. A good book on fly-fishing will explain much better than I have room for here.
  3. I LIKE THE LAST ANSWER BUT I USE SHOT IF ABSOLUTLY NECESARY IT MAKES IT HARDER TO CAST AND CAN "HINGE" YOUR FLY I THINK IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU ARE DOING I DON'T FLY FISH TRADITIONALLY I USUALLY FISH FOR LARGEMOUTH BASS AND USE MORE OF A RETRIEVE THAN A DRIFT
  4. For woolly-buggers and other bottom flys I use a tiny split shot in faster running water to aid in keeping it on the or near the bottom. Depending in the type fly line you are using too, if you have a sinking tip fly line no weight is needed in most cases. Too a lot of flys are weighted thus no need for extra weight.
  5. In some cases a very small split shot is used to get a sinking fly like a nympth to the depth of the fish. No "bait" is needed on a fly. Note that the split shot will effect your casting.
  6. No, you do not use or need splitshots or any other form of weight when fly fishing (for starters, splitshot usually flies off when flycasting)........ all your casting weight is provided by the flyline + the action of the rod. You do not have to put bait on the fly, as the fly is your bait..... it's basically a hook that's been tarted up with various materials to resemble an insect the fish feed on, and that's what draws the fish to it.
