Fishing Q&A

what kind of flies to trout like?

I am going fly-fishing for my first time in western Pa, and what kind of flies should I use? Floting, sinking, or what?

  1. It depends on what is roaming around at the time of year you are going. If the bug is red use a red fly. If it is late in the season when the weather is warm and the fish are deep use sinking flies if it is still cold outside use floating especially when the water is cold.
  2. take a mixture of both you will need dry flies and wet ones also i would try the olive buzzer and maybe some blood worms
  3. tell you what. the best thing is to find out what type of insects and bugs are in that stream. fly fishing is based heavily on what the trout or whatever you are fishing for like to eat. also try calling the local fly shop or sports store for further info.
  4. It depends on the situation. On hot days, fish stay close to the bottom. So nymphs or streamers would work better. If you are lucky & there happens to be a bug hatch going on, then you would resort to dry flies. Best to carry both. Then when you start fishing, try using a dropper technique. That way you could use both dries & nymphs. Also the dry fly could double as an indicator for you.
