Fishing Q&A

What do I need besides a motor to get my hull on the water...a 1979 Cajun Bass Fishing Boat?

The boat is about 16ft fiberglass. The hull looks to be in good shape. Nothing else is in working condition. I am going to purchase a used 1984 115hp Johnson Outboard. I don't know what else to get or where to take it to get these things installed. I just want to fish.

  1. Go to your state's fish & game department's website. You should find the regulations concerning boating there. The example link provided is for Texas Parks & Wildlife, look at the boating section. Your state should have an equivalent to this. As far as getting work done on the boat, the phonebook should give a listing under boat repair, you may also check with a local marina for advice on where to take it.
  2. If you aren't an experienced boater, get with one or start hanging out at a local boat repair shop... you may even be able to trade some advise, tips and expertise out for sweeping a floor or parking lot.... but either way... boating can be a really bad experience if your boat isn't ready. There are so many things that you need to make sure work and are in good shape before you go that it's kinda mind boggling.... check with your Department of Fish and Wildlife too... they are usually the one in alot of states that inspect boats for safety. Some basic things.... battery fully charged, fuel lines and connector are serviceable and don't leak, steering cables are lubed, tilt and trim are lubed, bow and stern lights work, you have a tow line, fuel tank is full and you have a clean fuel filter, bilge pump and live well pumps work, you have both hull drain plugs and they have a "dummy" cord, spare spark plugs and a small tool kit, your gas and oil are mixed correctly (I don't trust auto-injectors).... and the lsit goes on and on... and of course your boat needs to be properly registered and you have the registration numbers marked correctly on your boat. Hope this helps you out.
