Fishing Q&A

When is the best time for fishing in northeast alabama?

I dont have access to a boat so I have to fish from the bank. I really enjoy crappie and bream fishing. I also like to try my luck with bass fishing from the bank, but usually don't have much luck with that. Any and all answers are welcome and appreciated.

  1. Give it another week or two. The water temps here range from the mid 60's on small lakes down to the mid 50's on the river. The female bass (last week end) were holding in deep water and were full of eggs. This weekend I caught a few males up shallow (likely making the nest). You'll find the crappie in grass beds. Good luck.
  2. The best time for Bream is when they go on "bed" in April, May and June...I grew up in North Alabama and the best place I have found in the area to load up on Bream is at Lake Wheeler around the "Decatur Flats" and the creeks near the area like Swann Creek and Round Island Creek...there is a area called "West Dike"...it is shallow and you can wade it...check the maps, there is an area that we called "The Gravel Road" and it was just that...the Bream would stack up on the road and you could catch them till you were tired of catching them...we always wade and use a cane pole with worms (for the "Shell Crackers" or Red Bellied) or crickets (for the Blue Gill)...best time to fish for crappie is during the winter off the causeway going into Decatur...if you are not scared to wade, Swann Creek has a great supply of Largemouth, Spots, and Small Mouth...I caught a 4lb Small Mouth in Swann Creek about a mile from the HWY 31 Bridge in Oct 04 (there have been some bigger one's caught)...problem is you can't get there in a boat, so for tournaments this does not do a person any good...a June Bug soft plastic is the ticket...good luck...
  3. the best of the day for fishing is the morning or evening, right?
