What are the best bass fishing equipment and techniques for a beginner?

I fish once in a while, but have never fished bass. What equipment, and should I use a boat, what lure, technique, etc. should I use?

  1. As far as lures to use, Gary Yamamoto Senkos Texas Rigged is a good start for soft plastics. I also like Berkley Gulp! and Powerbait. Spinner baits and Buzz baits also work well. As far as live baits are concerned worms, minnows, and crawfish (these are the best). Boats are best for any kind of fishing, but you can catch them from the shore too. Just be sure to look for cover (reeds, downed trees, rocks, etc.) and fish weedless setups like the Texas Rig. As far as equipment, any medium-heavy action rod and reel would be good. Spincasters are good for beginners, but if you can master it, the spinning reels are better. Baitcasters are the ultimate bass reel, but are tricky, so master the spinning reel first because it's a good all-around reel.   2. I fish in Texas for Black Bass. Where you are fishing and what type of Bass may differ on the best bait to start with. I don't know what kinda money you are wanting to put out, it can get pricey. Start with Medium or Medium Heavy 6 foot rod (starting around $20 and going up to HOW MUCH?), a Bait Cast Reel (can start at $20 and going up to YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING) Your best deals can be had at sporting goods stores sometimes with a combo rod and reel for $70 to 100 dollars (both the rod and reel are important but between the two I would go with a higher price reel $80 to $100 over a higher price rod if you are just starting out. 10-12 pound test line (I like Berkley Trilene Big Game), a 3/8 ounce spinner bait (White or White/Chartreuse. In a boat would be best, you will be able to cover more area (shoreline and humps in open water also lay-downs are good. A lay-down is a tree that has fallen into the water.   3. Go Bass Pro to buy a set of Shimano spinning reel combo or the Rapala combo if u don't know how to choose. A set of about $100.00 to $150.00 combo should be pretty good for a beginner. Cheap noodle rod usually end up broken by the owner and thrown to the bottom of the lake. 10 to 15 lb tested Power Pro. Size 4 or 5 worm hook with various color of senko would do. When u feel the fish bite, no rush but wait till it pull again bcos u got to give em some time to swallow the whole worm. The smaller the bass, the bigger the bite.
