Fishing Q&A

I want to spend a week fly fishing in Montana. Any advice?

Any suggestions for where to fish, how to use my time, where to stay, etc.

  1. I live in Montana so here are a couple of places: Clark Fork River, Blackfoot River outside of Missoula, Yellowstone River near Billings, in Glacier National Park try St. Mary's Lake and Lake McDonald and parts of the Missouri River between Great Falls and Helena.
  2. A couple of years ago, I used a motel in West Yellowstone as a base for two weeks. I went very late in the season, the end of September, hardly any crowds. A guide might be worthwhile for a day. I used some books and the Internets to find info. From there you can fish the Madison from the park all the way to below Hebgen Dam and Quake Lake. It's steep and fast for a few miles below Quake Lake then flattens out in the Madison Valley. I always got the creeps driving past Quake Lake and looking at the Slide. I also drove into Yellowstone, up to the Lamar River and caught my first cutthroats on bead head nymphs. They say the Yellowstone River and Firehole aren't what they used to be, but it's worth the view - fishing next to bison and hot springs gurgling. I never made it to Old Faithful. I also fished the Henry's Fork of the Snake River, a very worthwhile trip to fish a spring creek, different from a freestone, like the Beaverkill. Most are a couple of hours drive, but I always went back to the motel at night. Good Luck, Leslie Wong
