Is it true that anyone over 21 does not need a license to pilot and take his boat out for recreational use?

I am buying a 24' boat to do a little fishing from time to time... i was told by a few but can't find any information online. I'm 27, do i need to get a license to take my boat out? non-commercial. ps - i live in South Florida. can someone link me to an operators license..or some info?? thanks
