Fishing Q&A

bass fishing?

When my hubby and I are out on the boat, he is always trolling the boat and I like to keep the boat still. Does trolling scare the fish because of the noise underneath the boat or is trolling good to keep moving?

  1. His lure is probably way behind the boat and the noise won't effect the fishing. He's covering a lot more water doing this to kind of feel out where the fish are gathering up at.
  2. trolling is O.K. for pike, for bass I prefer to work the weed lines and shallows just rowing
  3. While trolling, the lure is never that close to the boat so whatever sound the boat's making shouldn't be a problem. But if you find a nice object like a fallen tree or large stones/rocks in the water it's good to stand still and cast along these objects to make the bass strike.
  4. Trolling is a good way to catch fish.
  5. I've never known anyone to troll for bass. But are you talking about actual trolling or him using the trolling motor on the boat to simply move it around ?
  6. most people dont rtoll for bass, trolling is mostly more walleye, pike, and saltwater fish. the noise doesnt effect fish if they r deeper in the water
  7. I know exactly what your saying. My wife and I have the same argument when we fish together. Bass only occupy about 20% of any body of water, thats why he moves the boat alot. What I have done to compromise on this is to find a nice cove with alot of cover (downed trees, rocks, brush piles, etc.) for the fish. Being in a small cove accomplishes two things for you and your Hubby. 1. He can make multiple casts to mutiple targets without moving. 2. You can fish and let your lure or worm, minnow etc. sit there and not be moved. Hope this helps. Your question regarding does trolling the boat scare the fish? Yes, sometimes it does, but if your far enough from the bank it usually won't.
  8. If you are fishing for panfish, then once you find some fish you should anchor until they leave or stop biting. Then move on. For bass, trolling is definitely the way to go. If possible, set the motor on a constant speed and just steer, as this way you aren't making a lot of stop and starts on the motor. That is what will spook the fish. If you troll through an area where you are catching a bunch of fish, just circle around and go through the area again. Of course, if someone starts encroaching on your territory you may have to sit tight until they give up and leave. Hope this helps you out.
  9. I personally dont like to troll but it is very effective for catching bass (and pike). The noise wont scare the fish away if it is a trolling motor or small motor. If it is like 5 hp or more it would greatly reduced the amount of bass you catch. The lure is quite far from the boat when trolling but if the engine is noisy that dont matter much. Staying in one place can be good if your fishing in the middle of a lake, near fallen trees, when the water is cold, after a cold front has gone through, or when fishing rocky terrain. Trolling is good on nice warm or maybe even breezy days. When he is trolling, put a spinnerbait on your line and let it way out behind the boat (if the motor isnt noisy) and you should catch a bass or pike. Hope this helps!
  10. Well Joy, I'm with you on this one. Tell the hubby you'd like to do some worm or jig fishing for bass and maybe he will pick up his worm rod too and you will both start catching some quality fish instead of the occasional buck bass hanging on a ledge. Tell him he can troll with the electric motor on low speed to the next spot while you beat the shorelines with a Fat Free Shad lure. Once you start catch out fishing him he's bound to pay attention to your effort. I know this because my girlfriend used to say the same thing to me and when I slowed down (like she wanted to) I started getting more than twice as many bites. Be thankful that not all us men are so hard-headed and set in our ways and presentations. Best of luck to you!
  11. Yes, I know for a fact that it does, but that doesn't mean you can't catch fish while trolling. Trolling is an excellent means of covering a large amount of water while fishing.
  12. most bass fisherman use trolling motors as a positioning tool and yes off and on use can scare fish.its better to put it on one speed and keep moving as long as this technique is working for u.if bass are concentrated it pays to slow way down and use more of a saturation technique.most people cant resist using what they have/like flying around wide open just because they have a fast boat.all depends on what makes you happy.
  13. no it doesn't when trolling. both methods have been proven. it depends on location, geological layout, and time of yearI do know that bass get spooked easy. if they see you your done.
