what is the best type of fly fishing fly to use this time of year and what color and were can i find it?

  1. It really depends where you are planning to fish, geographically speaking, and in what type of water, and for what type of fish. A local fly shop would be able to provide the best particulars.

In general, fish will be fattening up now for winter. fish fast, and stay away from topwater flies. they're a pain in the neck in these fall winds anyhow. heavier flies will stay down better when stripping line at high speeds. i like ones with flat, long bellies made of silver (or gold) flashy material, and maybe some marabou tail. (not so much marabou that it hides the flashy belly) they don't need to be too big if they're weighted, say, with a beadhead. now and again give a short pause n let it sink, then begin to rip it back to you again. check out the "black nose dace" at cabelas.com, but a local gander mountain will have a great selection, too.
  3. grey ghost, mickey fins, and blue superiors are pretty good trout streamers year round.
