Fly fishing setup?

I just got a fly rod and was wondering if the backing line goes on the reel before the floating line of after and how much of it? and also do i tie them together or use a no-knot eyelets?

  1. Backing goes on the reel first... then the fly line, then the tapered leader. I would check online for a good knot chart to follow when tying these cords of different thickness and material together. You can use a no-knot eyelet also, but it's up to you. Hope this helps... Check out the fish I caught at www.brightstarlinks.com... then type fly_fishing.htm after the home page :) ... thought you might enjoy.
  2. it`s alittle extra work but if you run your fly line on the reeltaper end first then do a nail knot [ it will be shown in papers with the fly line takes a little work but it`s worth it ] then you can run the backing on so you get the right amount on. pull it all off and put it back on backing first .check on local clubs or trout unlimuted clubs or a good fly shop any of this wehelp you . orvis makes a loop it`s better then a no-knote dosn`t damage the flyline. fly fishing for dummies is a helpful book for starting out.good luck
  3. best way to figure it out is to reel the flyline onto the reel first then attach the backing to the flyline with a knot that will slip throught the guides easily. fill the reel to capacity with the backing then cut it. strip it all off the reel then attach the backing to the reel and wind it all in. the reel will be full with the right amount of backing.
