Fishing Q&A

Can you prove to me the world is round?

Went fishing on my boat last weekend and saw what looked like the end of the earth, about 70 miles offshore. Help? Great answers from all. But Doctor J, 70 miles is not enouph to obscure objects depending on the elevation at which you are from sea level. The curvature of the earth is totally dependant on how high you are standing? Not proof.

  1. Wow, it could've just been a cliff? What exactly did it look like >_> provide more detaillssssssssssssssssssssss!

  3. I can't prove it but dont be ignorant. It was the horizon line.
  4. the world IS round , look at a satellite what you saw was what you couldn't see anymore More proof; keep traveling west or east for months on end and eventually you will find yourself in the same place were you started
  5. Keep on rowing Columbus.
  6. Must be otherwise who ever started selling those globes would be in real trouble....
  7. Next time, close your eyes and steerer the boat right off the edge. If you're lucky, you'll land on the shell of the giant turtle the Earth is resting on.
  8. During lunar eclipse we see earth is round. Colombus & newton proed world is round
  9. BECAUSE the world is round, you cannot see 70 miles off shore (at that distance the surface of the earth has curved below your sight-line)!
  10. ROFL lets not be ignorant now... Seen a globe lately?> how about satellite picture of the earth? maybe gravity would be a sign... i never heard the story of a guy falling off the edge of the Earth before
  11. Sure! Look at the live photos taken of earth from our spaceships. Duh?
  12. Columbus & his round world theory forebears, the names elude me at the moment, noticed that on the horizon a ship's sail always appeared before the rest of the ship & if the Earth was flat the entire ship would be visible at the same time. Capiche?
  13. Why do you need to believe that the world is round? What will this belief do to help you live? The horizon is an optical illusion just like heat waves on concrete look like water. The 'shape' of the planet can only be verified from space and you will only be able to 'prove' it to yourself from that vantage. Even then, you are assuming that everything you sense with your optical nerves is actually the thing there.
  14. You want proof? Theres a bunch that doesn't involve trusting pictures from space...the easiest one is to look at the moon at night. That shadow on the moon, the one that makes it look cresent is the Earth's shadow on the moon. That shadow is curved because the Earth is round.
