does tying the knots right...?
really matter in fly-fishing? I mean I know you have to float it right, like on top of the water, middle or bottom, but as long as you tie it an it stays on does it really matter?

- Your knot matters very much in all fishing situations! A bad knot can reduce your line strength by over 50%. Get a good book or pamphlet that shows how to ties various knots. The standard fisherman's knot (several wraps of the tag end around the line then back through the base loop) is a good all around knot.
- I don't do much fly fishing but I did find a very good site for fisherman's knots and their applications. For tying a fly to a leader use the improved clinch knot. - It doesn't matter what type of fishing you do the knot has to be good ant tight other wise the fish will just swim off with it. You will loose a lot of fish and baits
- WildChild, The other thing about the knot (besides line strength) is that a properly tied one will keep your fly sitting just right on the surface. A poorly tied one will make it sit at an odd angle and look unnatural which might cause the fish to pass it up.
